About the Item

Michael Lyne (1912–1989) was a distinguished British sporting artist celebrated for his evocative depictions of field sports, hounds, horses, and rural life. Born in Upton Bishop, Herefordshire, as Charles Edward Michael Lyne, he was the son of a country parson. He briefly studied at Cheltenham School of Art, but his passion for hunting and country pursuits—especially foxhunting and coursing—became the central theme of his artistic career . From the late 1940s into the 1970s, Lyne transitioned from watercolours and body colour to focusing on oils, producing acclaimed works capturing the drama and character of the Grand National, fox hunts, and beagles. He also hunted his own pack of United Cotswold Beagles and painted packs across England, Ireland, and America. Beyond painting, he wrote and illustrated several books, including Horse, Hounds and Country and A Parson’s Son. Lyne’s work was exhibited in London and held in high regard within the genre of British sporting art, frequently auctioned at Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Bonhams, and more . One of Lyne’s more intimate and refined works is Studies of Salukis, a oil rendered with subtlety and precision. The painting presents four individual head studies of Saluki dogs, each captured from a slightly different angle and with distinct expressions and feathered ears. The heads are elegantly composed in a grid-like arrangement across a softly clothed cream background, which provides a warm, neutral surface that gently offsets the pale apricot and fawn fur tones of the dogs. Lyne’s technique reveals a masterful hand—delicate washes define the silky textures of the Salukis' long, fine fur; light pencil or ink outlines maintain clarity in facial features. Each dog’s gaze varies from alert to thoughtful, conveying personality within a restrained, scientific-study format. The cream-toned background, smooth and free from ornamentation, echoes Lyne’s approach in larger compositions—allowing the subjects to stand out without distraction. The overall effect is one of refined calm and studied elegance, characteristic of Lyne’s ability to merge precision observation with quiet aesthetic harmony. The painting is signed and dated The size of the painting is 51 x 61 cm
