Spider on the Ceiling, original contemporary figurative landscape of kittens
Located in Spring Lake, NJ
The kittens are mesmerized by a little black something jumping and bouncing around, unsure whether to snuggle with another kitten or stand proud and brave, alone! Well, that spider on the ceiling finally revealed itself and was decidedly out numbered! Despite their quest to conquer the agile beast, these kittens couldn't be more loveable than as depicted in this original contemporary figurative landscape. A veritable study of five kittens by noted professional portrait artist Joseph Sundwall...

Outside Size: 30 1/2" x 36 5/8"
A recent discovery of a painting that appears to be Farrar’s family dog. This was done when he was just fifteen years old.
As a teenager in the 1940s, Farrar received much local acclaim in the Washington D.C. art Scene. Words like “Child Prodigy”, “Brilliant” and “Gifted” were used to describe him in the local newspaper. He had a great bout of early success which included developing patrons among Washington DC’s art elite but this was short lived as he was afflicted with schizophrenia and alcoholism as an adult causing him to spend much of his life in mental institutions.
In 1942, Farrar won the Washington Times-Herald's outdoor art fair. This painting was executed the following year when he was 15 (1943). That same year he won the top prize at Atlanta University’s third annual “ Exhibition of Paintings, Sculpture and Prints by Negro Artists ” with a piece titled “ Queenie ”. Approximately one hundred and fifty works of art were included in the show, representing the best works of more than seventy-five contemporary African American artists. This show included works by Romare Bearden, who was awarded Honorable Mention for his painting “ The Two Genrerations ”. Also included among the exhibitors - Charles H. Alston, Allen Rohen Crite, Aaron Douglas, Fredrick Flemister, Sargant Johnson, Horace Pippin, Jacob Lawrence, Marjorie Wheeler Brown, Hughie Lee Smith, Lois Mailou Jones...

Auguste Vimar (French 1851-1916)
Circa 1900
21 x 17 1/2 (29 x 25 1/2 frame) inches
An excellent depiction of collies in the barn awaiting their master. The color and textures are very evocative of an actual stable right down to the hay scattered about. With its original frame, this is quite the statement piece.
Auguste Vimar was a French painter, sculptor, designer and illustrator though he is best known for his talents as an illustrator. He illustrated great classics like La Fontaine's Fables or books by his friends, such as L'Arche de Noé by Paul Guigou...

Genre animal oil painting of Persian kittens
By Agnes Augusta Talboys
Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Agnes Augusta Talboys
British, (1866-1941)
Grey Persians
Oil on canvas, signed & further inscribed verso
Image size: 20 inches x 28 inches
Size including frame: 31 inches x 39 inches
A charming painting of grey Persian kittens by Agnes Augusta Talboys. One of the kittens has climbed into a basket whilst another perches on the lid as the others sit by. A fifth kitten plays with the thread of a blanket.
Agnes Augusta Talboys was born Agnes Augusta Snell on 5 April, 1866 in Bristol. Her parents were Russell Abraham Snell, a customs officer and Agnes Snell (née Bullock) who were both members of the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Portland Street. The family lived at Freemantle Square in the Kingsdown area of Bristol and later Apsley Villa in Wellington Park, Redland.
After the death of her father in 1871, her mother took her to live with her aunt Eliza at her house in St Michael’s Hill where she resided with 2 other aunts. Although little is known about her early education, her spinster aunts were listed as property owners and it is highly likely they supported her in her artistic development.
She married George Harmer Talboys on 17 Jun, 1889 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Bristol and by 1901 the couple had moved to Brookfield House, Gerard Road in Weston-Super-Mare. At some point she started specialising in paintings of animals, particularly cats in the tradition of Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville and Henriette Ronner-Knip. From around 1907, her career as an artist began to take off and she started exhibiting at the Bristol Fine Arts Academy , which became the Royal West of England Academy in 1913. Although it is unclear whether or not she separated from her husband, by the end of the decade she had returned to Bristol on her own to live with her aunts at 20 Southfield Road, Cotham. She kept a studio at Cotham and from there exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham and continued exhibiting at the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) in Bristol where she became an early associate of the organisation.
She was known to keep Persian cats who she used as models for her paintings. One of her favourites was called Peter who was made famous when a painting of him was reproduced as a calendar during the late 1920’s. Talboys later inherited the house at Southfield Road and remained there for the rest of her life. In addition to being an artist she was also a skilled chess player and was a member of the Bristol Chess Club...

English 19th century portrait of two seated King Charles Cavalier Spaniels dogs
By James Cassie
Located in Woodbury, CT
James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician.
This piece is framed in its original frame and the painting is signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse.
From the inscription on the reverse, this painting was purchased from an important house sale...

Beth de Loiselle is a member of The National Oil and Acrylic Painter’s Society, Oil Painters of America, Audubon Artists and the International Guild of Realism.
