About the Item
40"x60" watercolor on paper, signed on reverse by the artist. In this contemporary surrealist painting, an anteater is foraging through cast off items from domestic life. The animal stands amongst a scattering of books and papers. A standing empty wine glass and an iphone are all that remain of its human counterpart. In this work on paper, paperclips relate to ants, which the long tongue of the anteater seems to be feasting on.
In this new series of paintings by Thomas Broadbent, the native habitat of the animals depicted has been altered to consist of cast off and reclaimed elements of human domestically. Foraging through their new environment, the animals gather together, collecting and searching for resources they can use. Broadbent personifies the creatures, presenting the question as to whether the animals are left with the remains of trappings of man or if they have altered their environment themselves.

Thomas Broadbent
Thomas Broadbent is well known for his contemporary naturalistic depictions of the intersection of nature and man. Thomas Broadbent has shown extensively throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. Broadbent’s work won the PULSE Prize for best solo booth at PULSE Art Fair. His work was subsequently featured in “Mission to Space” at the Children's Museum of Manhattan. His work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Broadbent’s numerous solo exhibitions include the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Croxhapox Art Gallery in Gent, Belgium, The Voorkamer Gallery in Lier, Belgium, Inspace gallery in Beijing, China and the Newark Arts Council. Broadbent’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Star-Ledger, New Jersey, NY Arts Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail and numerous other publications.
