About the Item

Thomas Gooch (1750-1802) 'Waggoner', a greyhound in a landscape Signed and dated 'T. Gooch 1799' lower right Oil on canvas Painting Size - 14 x 17 1/2 in Framed Size - 18 1/2 x 22in Provenance Sale, Christie's London, A Town House in Mayfair, 20th November 2008, Lot 577; The Collection of Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones. Thomas Gooch (1750–1802) was a British painter best known for his portraits of animals, particularly horses and dogs, as well as sporting and rural scenes. Active during the late 18th century, he was part of the flourishing tradition of British animal painting and was particularly admired for his ability to capture the physical characteristics and temperament of his animal subjects. Little is known about Gooch’s early life and training, but he is believed to have been a pupil of Sawrey Gilpin, one of the leading animal painters of the time. Gooch’s style was influenced by his teacher’s naturalistic approach, though he developed a distinct voice in his own right. His works were popular with country landowners and sporting patrons, who commissioned him to paint prized hunting dogs, horses, and domestic animals. His detailed and affectionate portrayals reflect not only technical skill but also a genuine understanding of animal form and behavior. Gooch exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1778 until the early 1800s. Among his most notable series was a group of paintings titled The Life and Death of a Racehorse (1792), a moralizing narrative cycle that traced the decline of a racehorse through neglect and abuse, reflecting contemporary concerns about animal welfare and the excesses of the sporting world. The series was engraved and widely distributed, enhancing his reputation beyond the traditional art-buying elite. Despite not reaching the lasting fame of contemporaries like George Stubbs, Gooch was a respected figure within his field. His works continue to be valued for their craftsmanship, charm, and insight into the social and sporting life of Georgian England.
