About

In Anne Deleporte's Photo Fresco series, the artist uses black gesso on printed newspaper pages to isolate specific images, disembodying them and removing the context provided by the newspaper's text. In this piece, "Liz" from 2014, only the blue powdered eye and the red lips of Elizabeth Taylor are visible of the portrait of the actress made via screenprint by Andy Warhol in 1964. The legendary print remains eerily recognizable in its edited version, as Liz peeks through the matte black of gesso to pin the viewer with her charm. Deleporte uses the gesso as a redacting tool, both referencing Warhol, Taylor, and the long and varied history of the print medium, and reframing the object into her own composition and narrative. Anne Deleporte (b. 1960, Corsica, France) is a New York based multi-media artist who has always been fascinated with phenomena of disappearance. True to Deleporte’s signature practice of covering up to reveal, her videos, paintings, and photos engage themes of identity and enigma.
