About

An early and important marine painting by one of the most important 19th century American maritime artists. Other artists of the period include Cozzens, Buttersworth, Salmon, and Fitz Lane. Framed dimensions: 29 x 43 inches PROVENANCE Private collection Rehs Galleries, Inc., New York City Jeanne Willoz-Egnor, Director of Collections Management and Curator of Scientific Instruments, at The Mariners’ Museum provided the following information. I have positively identified the sloop in the center as Active [owned by Frank W. Hurst, treasurer of the New York Yacht Club]. I was able to find the flag on the gaff in a yacht register. I was also able to find a sketch in Jacobsen's sketchbook #13 (1878) that most definitely shows Active and provides some description but no boat name--but I am totally convinced. There are four sketches in the series. I was also able to find two other images of unidentified yachts a little later in the sketchbook and one is definitely in a racing situation. Pat Schaefer, Collections Access & Research at Mystic Seaport: The Museum of America & the Sea, provided the following: We actually have an 1878 booklet of NYYC vessels and owners. Your second sloop is Vision, owned by J. J. Alexander, LOA 72, beam 20' 2". Active was owned by F. W. J. Hurst, LOA 56' 3", beam 16' 2". Literature about Active: In Aquatic Monthly and Nautical Review, January 1875, it was noted that: The cutter-yacht building at the yard of William Force, Keyport, New Jersey, for Mr. F.W.J. Hurst, is progressing satisfactorily, and will be in readiness at the opening of next season. Her model is highly praised. She will be 49 feet on the water-line; 59 feet over all; 17.6 feet beam; 5.6 feet depth of hold.
