About the Item

Florentine school of the early eighteenth century - attributable to Bartolomeo Mancini (Florence c. 1630 - Rome 1715) Mater Dolorosa Oil on canvas, 51 x 45 Framed 63 x 57 The painting we present to you depicts a particular iconography of the Virgin, called Mater Dolorosa, absorbed in suffering for the loss of her Son, which in our case was immortalized in profile. Although the features are markedly marked by pain, being able to even perceive the tears that run down her cheek, the work is characterized by an incredible sweetness and formal elegance. The noble beauty of the Virgin and her expressive power, here enhanced by an extreme depictional skill, immediately lead us to detect the echoes of the devotional painting of the Florentine Carlo Dolci. Among the protagonists of seventeenth-century painting in Florence, the style of Dolci was, and still is, much appreciated for the masterful definition of the figures, often collected in ecstatic poses and almost enveloped in an enveloping moonlight, which gives the figures he created a unique texture, making them resemble porcelain. The elegant mastery of light and the use of a finely applied coloristic material are the peculiar characteristics of the painter who, in addition to outlining the figures, highlights the features that seem to emerge from the dark monochrome background. Thanks to the creation of extraordinary works, executed with impeccable diligence and with a descriptive rigor that we could say "hyperrealist", Dolci was much appreciated by the most illustrious members of the Medici House and the European nobility, leading his workshop to satisfy numerous requests from a very demanding client. We can place our canvas, which however denotes a particular finesse and executive quality, at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, presumably made by an author very close to him. In our opinion it is possible to detect the pictorial characters of the Florentine Bartolomeo Mancini, a painter who many critics count as one of the few pupils of Dolci. Author extremely attentive to perceive the stimuli of the master (he in fact took many works and faithfully replicated them) he still managed to have his own expressive identity. The painting is in excellent condition, perfectly clean and relined.
