As she developed an abstract style, Ms. Hillsmith exhibited her work in three shows at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century Gallery in Manhattan and taught briefly at the legendary Black Mountain College in Asheville, N.C. Starting in 1946, she worked at Atelier 17, Stanley William Hayter’s intaglio printmaking workshop, which was then in New York, alongside European artists like Miró, Yves Tanguy and Jacques Lipchitz. She had her first show in New York at Jimmy Ernst’s Norlyst Gallery in 1943. In the 1950s and ’60s she had solo shows at the Charles Egan Gallery and the Peridot Gallery.
