About the Item

‘Trois Amis’, large antique Orientalist oil painting by Adam Styka Polish/ French, Early 20th Century Canvas: Height 61cm, width 73cm Frame: Height 78cm, width 91cm, depth 5cm This captivating Orientalist oil painting is by the Polish-French artist Adam Styka (1890–1959). Originally from Poland, Styka later relocated to France, where he refined his artistic skills at the esteemed French Academy of Fine Arts. His works were prominently showcased in prestigious exhibitions, including the Salon de Paris, earning widespread recognition across Europe and the United States. Entitled Trois Amis (Three Friends), this evocative painting portrays a serene desert setting, where a white horse, a traditionally dressed seated figure, and a resting dog form a harmonious composition. The three companions are positioned around a tented encampment. The elderly man, seated cross-legged on the ground, exudes an air of introspection, while the majestic white horse remains securely tied to the tent. Meanwhile, the relaxed dog rests closest to the extinguished campfire, with wisps of smoke still gently rising, adding a sense of movement to the scene. The expansive backdrop features distant mountains, reinforcing the vastness and solitude of the desert environment. Rich in detail and painted in warm, luminous tones, the artwork reflects Styka’s signature approach, masterfully capturing the light, textures, and atmosphere of the Orientalist genre. Encased in an ornate giltwood frame, this outstanding painting bears the artist’s signature ‘Adam Styka’ in the lower right corner, with its title inscribed on the reverse. An exceptional example of Styka’s celebrated artistry, this magnificent painting would make an superb addition to any collection of Orientalist art.

Antique Orientalist Oil on Board 'Desert Bedouin', by José Benito Ortega
By José Benito Ortega
Located in London, GB
Antique Orientalist Oil on Board 'Desert Bedouin', by Spanish Artist Ortega Spanish, early 20th Century Frame: Height 51cm, width 59cm, depth 2cm Board: Height 44cm, width 53cm, depth 0.5cm Fluidly painted, this vibrant oil on board depicts a dusty Orientalist scene. Four Bedouin ride camels alongside a flurry of goats, carrying lambs and hens in saddlebags. Other figures clothed in Middle Eastern garments walk with them, and the busy scene fades into a dusty, evening landscape. The colour palette is vibrant and hued with dusky pinks and oranges, giving the impression that these Bedouin are returning back to camp. The cropped composition also gives a dynamic feel to the picture: a glance into early 20th Century desert life. The present painting was created by Spanish artist José Benito Ortega...

Very Fine and Large Orientalist Oil on Canvas Titled "Ashura Rituals, Tangier"
By Gordon B. Coutts 1
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Gordon B. Coutts (Scottish/American, 1868-1937) A very fine and large orientalist oil on canvas titled "Ashura Rituals, Tangier" (Arabic: عاشوراء‎ ʻĀshūrā’ - Urdu: عاشورا‎ - Persian: عاشورا‎ - Turkish: Aşure Günü). Signed and inscribed: 'Gordon Coutts/TANGIER' (lower right), circa 1920. Provenance: The Fisher Art Museum, University of Southern California. Gordon Coutts led a peripatetic career, born in Aberdeen, Scotland, he then studied and travelled to Glasgow, London, Paris and Rome before settling in Melbourne, Australia in 1891. In 1896 he moved to Sydney, where he taught at the Art Society of New South Wales, before returning back to Europe in 1899. With the climate of northern Europe detrimental to Coutts' poor health, he moved with his wife, Alice Grey, to the United States where he became a frequent exhibitor at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. In 1920 he travelled to Tangiers, Morocco where, dressed as an Arab, he passed from tribe to tribe observing the lifestyle, customs and practices of the the village people and Bedouins. The present work depicts the celebration of Ashura. The day of Ashura is commemorated by Shi'ite Muslims; "A day of pain, pilgrimage and pageantry, it is one of the holiest in their religion. The word Ashura means 10, and refers to the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. This is a period of mourning and cleansing, which marks the martyrdom of Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad...
