About the Item

Framed size: 37" x 46.5" Signed bottom right "Making the Next Move" is a very typical example of Schroder's work. The figures sitting around the table debating their "next move" transports the viewer to the scene. You wonder what the topic of conversation is? Who are these finely dressed men? And what brings them all together? This fine example of Schroder's work illustrates his polished style and his rich detail.Cavaliers playing cards, morning visitors, letter writes, a cavalier refreshing, the armourers or servants at their domestic duties constitute many of the subjects used in Schroder's interior scenes. This detailed interior scene reveals Schröder as a devoted follower of the Dutch Genre tradition. Schröder uses the light flooding in from the window to highlight interior accessories such as the plate on the mantle-piece, and the silver-ware upon the stool, creating a light and airy atmosphere in which to set his game of dice. This attention to detail is extended to the Seventeenth century costume, where shows his skill at creating a sense of texture. We see the figures of four men; two at play, with the others observing the game with interest. Schröder has taken the opportunity to depict four very different figures, giving the picture a sense of variety to complement the serene interior.
