About the Item
After Napoleon introduced Europe to the different and exotic life of the Middles East, it was Delacroix who was the first to return. He brought back vivid images to an unbelieving public.
His primary student in these early days was the young painter Decamps. He soon became the teachers closest assistant, and whose work reflected his talent and was often confused as the teachers.
Our painting has a group of Arab men engaging in a negotiation near a bazaar. The figures are clad in the traditional Arab dress and through the alley behind them is a clear blue sky and clouds. The frame is an extraordinary Islamic scripted motif, and is a perfect compliment to the canvas. The oil is signed, which is rare for him, and in great condition.
