1921

About the Item

The Prince Of Wales By Alfred Munnings. A rare and signed Sir Alfred Munnings coloured offset lithograph of H.R.H The Prince Of Wales, sat astride his chestnut hunter, Forest Witch. King Edward VIII, as Prince of Wales, can be seen dressed for a fox hunt with top hat and red riding coat. It commemorated the prince's 1920 Northamptonshire season of hunting, an activity his parents, King George V and Queen Mary, persuaded him to give up in 1929. Fine Art Trade Guild blind stamp lower left. Print details 'Copyright, The Modern Art Society (England) Ltd and The Field Press Ltd, Entered in the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. 1921'. Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; 23 June 1894 - 28 May 1972), later known as the Duke of Windsor, was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire and Emperor of India from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on December 10th of the same year. He was created Prince of Wales on his 16th birthday, seven weeks after his father succeeded as king. His proposal to marry Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second, was deeply frowned upon. The prime ministers of the United Kingdom and the Dominions opposed the marriage, arguing a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands was politically and socially unacceptable as a prospective queen consort (and at this period, members of the Royal Family were not permitted to marry a divorced person). When it became apparent he could not marry Simpson and remain on the throne, he abdicated. He was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI. With a reign of 326 days, Edward was one of the shortest-reigning British monarchs. Print Sz: 18 1/4"H x 23 1/4"W Frame Sz: 26 3/4"H x 31"W In Hogarth black frame VG
