About the Item
André de Moller (French, 20th Century)
City Scene with Carriages, circa 1980
Oil on canvas, signed on the reverse
This lively and intricately composed urban scene by André de Moller evokes the elegance and rhythm of late 19th-century Parisian life, interpreted through a modern Impressionist sensibility. Painted circa 1980, it captures the bustle of a grand city square, alive with figures, carriages, and omnibuses under the soft winter light of a pale sky.
De Moller’s perspective, looking obliquely from above, recalls the elevated viewpoints of Caillebotte and Pissarro. Yet his treatment of colour and line—crisp, decorative, and highly ordered—places the work within the 20th-century revival of the Impressionist spirit. The scene brims with movement: the yellow carriages, orange wheels, and umbrellas punctuate the square with rhythm and balance, while the procession of dark-coated figures lends contrast and depth.
The artist’s brushwork is meticulous but free, using subtle tonal shifts to suggest sunlight across cobblestones and the flicker of shadow beneath bare trees. Though modern in execution, the painting carries the timeless charm of Belle Époque Paris—its theatres, cafés, and boulevards reimagined through de Moller’s nostalgic eye.
Framed in a gilt-edged moulding that complements the warmth of the palette, this work exemplifies de Moller’s distinctive combination of classical structure and contemporary painterly energy. It remains a vivid homage to both Impressionist tradition and the enduring fascination of the Parisian street.
Framed in a hand made English gold and painted finish, original to the piece.

When Johnny left school, there were many interests which ran alongside his career at the time in the City of London as an Aviation Insurance Broker at Lloyds – writing music, playing with a band, tinkering with Vintage cars, marketing various inventions and making painting trips when possible – it wasn’t long before the Arts beckoned and at twenty six he won a place at the Fine Arts Academy in Florence where he moved in 1972.
A year later, moving near Lake Trasimeno, he continued his studies at the Fine Arts Academy in Perugia. Again on the move, he travelled to Pietrasanta near Carrara with some sculptors and stayed on this coast for nearly a year before moving eventually to Grimaldi, just inside Italy – a small medieval village about three hundred yards from the Italian /French frontier close to Monte Carlo.
Here he began a series of backstage paintings – at the Opera and Orchestra rehearsals, fashion shows, at the Circus, Jazz and Cabaret – exhibiting regularly along the coast in Monaco, Nice, Cannes and Antibes.
In 1984, circumstances changed and it was necessary to return to England – where a chance invitation to the races triggered a whole new series ‘At the Races’ which in time produced a wider series entitled ‘The British Sporting Year’ of Polo, The Henley Regatta, Derby Day, Wimbledon, Bowls, Cricket, Golf – even Jousting at Hever Castle...

Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure and landmark paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of eighteen, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
