Andrea Vaccaro
17th century Italian old master - A spiritual awakening - Martha and Magdalene

About the Item

Martha and Magdalene, attributed to Andrea Vaccaro (Naples, 1604–1670) by the esteemed Cabinet Turquin We hope that this painting may be a source of inspiration and strength for its future owner. The message it carries is a profound one: true wealth and happiness are not dependent on outside factors, but come from within. To appreciate the beauty of life and the world; the chirping of birds, the changing shapes of clouds, a laugh shared with loved ones; offers more lasting joy than any race toward the next achievement. In our fast-paced world, we sometimes tend to forget this. Yet here, in the quiet exchange between two sisters, is a timeless reminder to pause, to reflect, and to rediscover what truly matters. This luminous painting by Andrea Vaccaro captures a moment of stillness and transformation. Martha, calm and composed, leans gently toward Mary Magdalene, who stands adorned in fine garments yet wears a contemplative gaze. Vaccaro’s delicate use of light and shadow bathes the figures in a serene glow, allowing their presence to speak clearly and intimately. The rich textures, elegant composition, and emotional grace of the scene reflect the artist’s extraordinary sensitivity. This is not a dramatic confrontation, but a private moment filled with clarity and hope. In this contrast between material richness and inner awakening, the painting offers a gentle yet powerful truth: that the most lasting treasures are found within. Biography: Andrea Vaccaro was one of the most gifted and respected painters of the Neapolitan Baroque. Born in Naples in 1604, he began his career under the influence of Caravaggio, adopting a deep understanding of light, realism, and psychological nuance. Over time, his style matured into one of lyrical refinement, shaped by the grace of Guido Reni and the emotional elegance of Van Dyck and Pietro Novelli. Vaccaro was particularly known for his religious works, which stand out for their intimacy and humanity. Rather than depict saints and biblical figures in grand spectacle, he brought them down to earth, offering portraits of reflection, compassion, and transformation. His ability to convey emotion through gesture and light gave his works an enduring resonance that continues to move viewers today. His works can now be found in major collections including the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille. His legacy endures not only in institutions, but in the quiet depth and soulful presence of his paintings. Medium and Dimensions: Oil on canvas measuring ca. 127 by 95,5 cms Provenance and Expertise: Private collection, France Expertised and confirmed by Cabinet Turquin, Paris Whether placed in a home, a study, or a collection, the painting will continue to speak as it has for the past 400 years. Not just of biblical history, but of our shared humanity, and of the lasting peace found in choosing what truly matters.

18th Century Oil on Canvas Portrait, Major Alexander Brown in Military Uniform.
By Sir David Wilkie
Located in Cotignac, FR
18th Century Military portrait of a young officer in Napoleonic period military dress. The painting is not signed but the subject is Major Alexander Brown. The work is oil on canvas later mounted on board and presented in a fine 'Regence style' carved gilt frame. There are labels to the back referring to the subject, 'Major Brown of Trinity' and a framers trade label from Edinburgh. A magnificent and imposing portrait of a young military officer in the prime of his life. His red uniform adorned with fine buttons, fringed epaulettes and high gilt collar. His ruddy complexion offset by his stylish hair, a quiff and swept forward to the sides as was the fashion at the time. Sir David Wilkie RA (18 November 1785 – 1 June 1841) was a Scottish painter, especially known for his portraits, including formal royal ones, and scenes from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. He painted successfully in a wide variety of genres, including historical scenes. His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar, returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter". He was Principal Painter in Ordinary to King William IV and Queen Victoria. Apart from royal portraits, his best-known painting today is probably The Chelsea Pensioners Reading the Waterloo Dispatch of 1822 in Apsley House. Sir David Wilkie was actually admitted in 1799 (despite only being 14) through the influence of the Earl of Leven...
