Provenance
Sal Sciarrino, New Jersey
Born in New Jersey in 1854, Arthur Hoeber had a natural talent for sketching and as a water colorist. He attended Cooper Union, later training under James Carroll Beckwith at the Art Students League.
In 1851 he obtained a letter of introduction to landscape painter and founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, British painter Sir John Millais. Millais also encouraged him to travel France where he attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and studied under Jean Leon Gerome. During his tenure in France, he studied privately under French Academic painter Gustave Courtois.
His skill was recognized in Paris so much so that he was juried into the 1882 Paris Salon, where he continued to exhibit until 1885. He then relocated to New York City and where he focused on the tidal shores of Cape Cod, New Jersey and Long Island.
Hoeber was also a noted author and wrote a number of art books including, “Famous American Women Artists”, “The Barbizon Painters’ and “American Sea Painting”. He was a recognized art critic and wrote for The New York Times, New York Post and Harper’s weekly.
His works can be seen at the Newark Museum, the Hudson River Museum, the Georgia Museum of Art and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.
