About the Item

This charming late 19th-century oil painting by Arturo Orselli (fl. 1880-1896) depicts a huntsman wearing riding gear conversing somewhat flirtatiously with two ladies. Attired in outfits befitting the sumptuous fashions of the 1820s, these high society ladies are dressed to impress. On the left, adorned in yellow, parasol in hand, a curious young woman points her toe while lifting her skirt - heaven forbid it would touch the dusty earth. While on the right, dressed in blue, with an extraordinary hat, her companion meets the gentleman’s gaze. Are they competing for his love? A weary dog has seen it all before... Decorative scenes such as this were extraordinarily popular during the late 19th century and often adorned various city galleries. Buying habits were noticeably different compared to earlier in the century, partly due to the influence of female customers. To meet this growing demand, numerous Italian artists visited London and were welcomed by various art dealers. It’s possible that Orselli trained in Italy before travelling over but there’s very little information on him. The name doesn’t appear in any digitised ancestry records, which begs the question why. It could be a pseudonym for an Italian who was working exclusively for multiple galleries. Or alternatively, it’s a British illustrator who thought he’d add a little flair to his offering. Either way, his talent for figures, wit, and colour are more than evident. The painting sold in Toronto, Canada, for 16,000 CAD (£9,340), in 1988. Signed in the lower right and held in a later frame. Provenance: British, European & American Oil Paintings, Waddingtons, Toronto, 30 November 1988, lot 684 / Private collection, UK. Artist’s auction maximum: £9,340 for ‘Flirtatious Huntsman’, Oil on canvas, Waddingtons, British, European & American Oil Paintings, Toronto, 1988 (lot 684).

Alfred Augustus Glendening, Landscape With Woodland Track & Sheep
By Alfred Augustus Glendening Senior
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This charming late 19th-century oil painting by English artist Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921) depicts a picturesque woodland view with sheep. Glendening was a distinguished painter of landscapes. Amid the gentle golden glow of British summertime, sheep graze on a country track flanked by several mature trees. It’s likely to be a view in Sussex or Kent and possibly painted at Knole Park near Sevenoaks. Born in Hampton on Thames, London, Glendening was raised in an area popular with Victorian artists. The river, with its zig-zagging steamboats and silvery waters, provided ample inspiration for a young impressionable mind. This fascinating environment delivered the building blocks for his artistic development, and one can imagine him sketching on the riverbank along with other painters. It would take a little time before he turned to art as a career but, once he pursued his calling, success was inevitable. Travel during the mid-19th century was becoming a little easier thanks to the emerging rail network, and Glendening filled his sketchbooks on various cross-country trips. In 1864, he debuted at The Royal Society of British Artists with a view from Cumbria’s picturesque Lake District. The following year, exhibiting ‘A Cornfield, Kent’ at the Royal Academy. Many of his works were centred around shimmering water with the Isle of Wight another frequent destination. Soon, the rising middle classes took note and he became a firm favourite - views in North Wales, the Highlands, Surrey, and Devon captured with a deft touch. His approach was predominantly naturalistic and lacked the grandiosity of many early Victorian painters. His tranquil vignettes are skilfully observed with dapples of light dancing across reflected foliage. The occasional bird picked out with weight and movement. Glendening’s exquisite draughtsmanship was matched by a keen understanding of tone and value, resulting in balanced compositions with blissful moods. By 1903, he’d exhibited 47 works at the Royal Academy - quite an achievement for a late starter. Today, various museums hold examples including at Southampton and Newport. Signed/dated lower left and held within a later frame. Provenance: Private collection, UK. Artist’s auction maximum: £32,000 for ‘Bramber Castle’, Oil on canvas, Christie’s, 19th Century Pictures...

Title: Cape Maneuver Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (Barcelona, 1919 – 1986) Technique: Oil on canvas mounted on board Dimensions: 19.7 x 23.6 in (50 x 60 cm) Date: Circa 1980s Signature: Signed "Tuser" in the lower left corner Condition: Excellent; thick, vibrant brushwork and vivid colors well preserved. 📝 Description This painting captures a dramatic moment in the bullfight — the classic verónica — as the matador gracefully halts the bull’s charge with a sweeping motion of the cape. The vivid contrast of magentas, blues, and golds intensifies the theatrical tension between man and beast. The composition is dynamic yet controlled, emphasizing the poise of the torero against the raw force of the bull. The expressive brushstrokes and thick impasto enhance the sense of movement, while the abstracted background ensures focus remains on the central figures. The piece is a striking blend of figuration and emotional energy, characteristic of Tuser’s taurine works. 👤 About the Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez José María Tuser Vázquez was a Spanish painter born in Barcelona in 1919.
