This artwork "Excavator" c.1990 is an oil painting on canvas attributed to American artist Ben Abril, 1923-1995. It is signed at the lower left corner. The canvas size is 19.75 x 17.5 inches, framed size is 24.35 x 32.5 inches. Framed in a gold and black frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Born in Los Angeles, California, Ben Abril is known for his paintings, primarily in watercolor, of California landmarks. He became an active painter who taught oil painting and belonged to art clubs in Laguna, Beverly Hills, San Gabriel, and Brea. His paintings are at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. Abril studied at the School of Allied Arts, Glendale College, and the Los Angeles Art Center. From 1966 to 1977, he was Architectural Coordinator for Los Angeles County. While working for the County of Los Angeles at the Hall of Administration, Ben made time after work to render Bunker Hill scenes including Angels Flight, located two blocks away. He has also taught art at several community colleges. His residence has been in La Canada. Abril's many collectors include the U.S. Navy, Pope John Paul and the King of Spain.. Abril has been honored with election to the American Watercolor society in New York, and the National Watercolor Society in Los Angeles. He was included in "Who's Who in America," and "Who's Who in Art" Cambridge, England. Ben Abril died in Los Angeles, California June 7th, 1995.

The canvas size is 20 x 24 inches, framed is 28 x 32 inches.. Framed in a antique style frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Gail Sherman Corbett, sculptor, painter and art teacher, was the daughter of Frederick Coe and Emma Jane (Ostrander) Sherman and was born in Syracuse, New York. Her father was descended from Philip Sherman of Dedham, Essex, England, who came, in 1633 to Roxbury, Massachusetts, and afterwards, with eighteen others, founded the town of Portsmouth and the Colony of Rhode Island. He was the Second Secretary of that colony. Corbett's mother was a descendant of Michael Dyckman, one of the framers of the New Amsterdam Charter in 1623. Gail Sherman was educated at the Syracuse High School and the Anne Brown School, New York. She began her studies in sculpture at the Art Students' League in New York under Augustus Saint Gaudens, George DeForest Brush and others, and was later a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. She was given her first large commission in 1901, and, between then and 1914, when her work was interrupted by the War, she executed many memorial tablets, portrait busts, bas-reliefs, sundials, fountains, and medals. Her work received a medal and mention at the Panama-Pacific Exhibition in San Francisco in 1915. Her best known groups are the Hamilton S. White Memorial, Syracuse, New York (1905), the Kirkpatrick Memorial Fountain, Syracuse (1908), and the bronze doors of the Municipal Building, Springfield, Massachusetts (1913). Miss Sherman was married at Syracuse, June 28, 1905, to Harvey Wiley Corbett, a New York architect. They had two children: Jean and John Maxwell Corbett. During 1915-1917, Mrs. Corbett gave her services to the Woman Suffrage Party, and in 1916-1917 she was Chairman of the Chelsea Branch of the Woman's Municipal League.
