About the Item

It's 1964, and the brilliantly inventive artist/illustrator Bob Peak is turning the world of commercial art upside down. In "Pregame Football Players" for Sports Illustrated, Peak puts the viewer on the field behind the knees of the football players. He depicts them in a pregame pep talk as more of an abstraction than a representation. Notice the Army marching colors seen through the legs of the center player. Peak ties an extremely wide-angle close-up with figurative elements in the distance. His radical cropping with broad areas of bold blue accented by strokes of calligraphic orange makes this work more of the domain of abstract painting than an expected magazine illustration. Congratulations to the Art Director and Editors at Time/Life for being brave enough to run such a stylized look for their football story. Bob Peak, in my opinion, was the Norman Rockwell of post-war American Illustration, with this work being one of his seminal works that paved the way for a new way of seeing. It's more fine art than commercial art. For Apocalypse Now, in 1979, Francis Ford Coppola could have hired any artist in the world to create the movie poster and image for his film. He hired Bob Peak. Signed lower right. Unframed -Condition: Some creases, mostly visible with raking light. Tape remnants on the perimeter look very artsy and add to the overall quick and bold look of the work. Colors are bold, saturated and punchy.

Football Team Sports Action Painting Abstract Expressionism, Sports Illustrated
By Bob Peak
Located in Miami, FL
Football players cloaked in oversized Browns jackets are seen from behind running off the field. Always the graphic innovator, legendary illustrator Bob Peak creates a radical composition by leaving the bottom two-thirds of the picture plane empty of detail. To convey a sense of motion, Peak uses broad strokes of paint similar to the action painters Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning, who were the dominant force in the fine art world in the 1960s. Clearly, one can see a cross-over influence from Fine Art to commercial illustration as Peak strikes a balance between abstract versus figurative art. This work was done on an assignment for Sports Illustrated...

There are a lot of people in the art world today who dismiss illustrators are being commercial solely because the artists identified as being commercial artists and that the work was done on assignment. The Football Players
By Bernard Aptekar
Located in New York, NY
As art historian and writer Suzanne Ramljak wrote "the ambivalent relationship between humanity and machinery has informed Aptekar's art from the start and remains a central theme in his work. Like many of the issues Aptekar addresses, technology is not without contradiction." The shocking imagery of juxtaposed human and natural forms with mechanical elements, using clear contours and colors, is certainly not oblivious of Fernand Leger latest work and what he called "the law of contrast". At the same time, the political and social commentary that are a constant inherent component of Aptekar's work has it's roots in the work of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, who Apterkar met at age of 11. The outcome is an imagery of an extraordinary visual impact and absolutely unique to Aptekar's own creative process. This work "The Football Players...
