Bourgault
Mid Century French Fauvist Portrait, Oil on Canvas, Circle of Kees van Dongen

About the Item

Large Mid Century French Fauvist oil on canvas portrait by Bourgault. The painting is signed bottom left and signed, located and titled to the top back stretcher. The location is marked as Opio which is a region between Cannes and Nice in the south of France. Van Dongen was living in Monte Carlo at this time and maybe the artist and he were acquainted hence the influence of styles. Provenance: Private Collection, south of France. A magnificent and imposing portrait of a beauty holding a bottle of perfume, the shape suggests it could it be Chanel Number 5. She is wearing a beautiful silk robe with a high collar. Her hair fashionably short she sits in a high backed chair surrounded by bottles of oils and bath salts. Hanging beside her a still life of flowers in a vase. Bourgault has used an unusual but extremely successful rainbow like colour palette clearly inspired by the portraits of Kees van Dongen. Cornelis Theodorus Maria "Kees" van Dongen (26 January 1877 – 28 May 1968) was a Dutch-French painter who was one of the leading Fauves. Van Dongen's early work was influenced by the Hague School and symbolism and it evolved gradually into a rough pointillist style. From 1905 onwards – when he took part at the controversial 1905 Salon d'Automne exhibition – his style became more and more radical in its use of form and colour. The paintings he made in the period of 1905–1910 are considered by some to be his most important works. The themes of his work from that period are predominantly centered on nightlife. He painted dancers, singers, masquerades, and theatre. Van Dongen gained a reputation for his sensuous – at times garish – portraits, especially of women.
