About the Item
The artist Carole Garland is a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and so thought a painting of sporting figures in
motion would pay tribute. At the start of the 2023 season, the artist imagines a happy time when the
players are having a bit of fun. The artist punctuates the moment with a Greek chorus of enthusiasts
expressing their unabashed joy.
While the painting’s meaning is clear, the details are ambiguous. The artist experiments with
rectangular blocks which filter the sun and colorful rectangles which amplify the players’
movements.
Carole Garland has shown in many Southern California venues, most recently at TAG Gallery,
Bergamot Station; realART Gallery; West Los Angeles College Gallery; the Rose Cafe, Venice;
the Santa Paula Art Museum, and the Studio Channel Islands Gallery, Camarillo. She is in
numerous art collections in Southern California and throughout the country.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy.
To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit.
