Buddhist Monks in Prayer The young monks are bowed in devotional meditation in a Buddhist Prayer Hall.
The beautiful harmonized environment and the sacred atmosphere allow serenity and tranquility to prevail. The large group in prayer creates a powerful spiritual impact upon the viewer. The monks are praying in a religious practice that traces back to the Fifth Century in ancient India and is the fourth largest religion in the world. Buddhism was introduced in the U.S. by scholars and spiritual pioneers in the mid-nineteenth century and is a growing practice.
`Fine artist Carole Garland was moved by the solemn attention and devotion of these young monks in Myanmar (Burma). Garland captures the beauty of the shimmering columns, the shining crimson floor and the distant Buddha in the background. The artist employs the light illuminating the white robes, draping across the monks' shoulders, to create a "V" design and a triangular movement around the painting.
This 24"x30" Oil Painting on a Wood Panel is wired for easy hanging and the natural wood sides may serve as a frame.
Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California including several juried California Art Club shows. She's mounted many individual exhibits at TAG Gallery in Bergamot Station, Santa Monica. She recently was in shows at DeFrenS Gallery, Westlake Village; Gallery of Hermosa, Hermosa Beach; West Los Angeles College Art Gallery; Santa Paula Art Museum; Topanga Canyon Gallery and the Channel Islands Studio Gallery, Camarillo, to name a few.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

A friend of Carole Garland’s suggested she might be so enthusiastic about painting figures and groups of people because of her previous isolation during Covid. In fact, her one wish when it was over was to sit at a sidewalk café anywhere and people watch. But in this work, there is something more.
“Thoughts and Prayers” is a reaction to attending a Bingo fundraiser for a Recovery House. Everyone was enjoying themselves at various tables. It was a benign event, except for the specter of mass shootings in innocent, unsuspecting gatherings like this. In the painting, Garland attempts to convey her feelings of dread at an otherwise boisterous occasion. It was happening everywhere, anywhere, all the time.
