About the Item

Charles Walter Simpson, RBA, RI, ROI 1885-1971 British The Tent Signed "Charles Simpson" (lower right) Oil on canvas The sunny warmth of a leisurely day on the beach radiates from this composition by acclaimed British genre painter, Charles Walter Simpson. The Tent is an enchanting depiction of pastoral tranquility and youthful contemplation that epitomizes Simpson's mastery of idyllic British scenes. Nestled beneath their billowing tent and stylish ribboned hats, the girls share a pensive moment of quiet while protecting their porcelain complexions from the harsh rays of the blaring sun. Simpson's sitters are the quintessence of early 20th-century young womanhood, with their fashionable dresses, coiffured ringlets and docile expressions that take in a day of beachside recreation. The Tent comes to life with a luminous color palette and bold layers of impasto that are the hallmarks of Simpson's oeuvre. The son of a major general, Charles Walter Simpson was born in Camberley, Surrey, into a family of esteemed art patrons who had supported important artists including Millais and Watts. Trained in both England and Paris, Simpson would go on to exhibit widely at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy, the Paris Salon, and many others, even winning the silver medal at the Paris Salon of 1923. He was elected RI in 1914 and ROI in 1921, and Simpson's later years were spent in Cornwall where he and his wife established a painting school in St. Ives. 20th century Canvas: 20" high x 24" wide (50.80 x 60.96 cm) Frame: 27 1/4" high x 31" wide x 2 3/4" deep (69.22 x 78.74 x 6.99 cm)

Les deux soeurs by Federico Zandomeneghi
By Federico Zandomeneghi
Located in New Orleans, LA
Federico Zandomeneghi 1841-1917 Italian Les deux soeurs (The two sisters) Signed and dated "Zandomeneghi 95" (lower left) Oil on canvas Two sisters enjoy a quiet moment in a rich green landscape in this intimate oil on canvas from Federico Zandomeneghi. An Italian painter by birth who became a fixture in the Parisian Impressionist scene, Zandomeneghi is best remembered for his sentimental and affectionate scenes of women in both domestic and public spheres. Zandomeneghi’s creative and technical prowess in composition is highlighted in this painting. The artist deftly frames the young pair in the lower register of the canvas, imbuing the work with a remarkably observational feel. The girls pensively gaze off to the right, lost in thought; Zandomeneghi allows the viewer to witness a natural moment of discussion and contemplation shared among the sisters. The soft palette employed by the artist gives the whole scene an atmospheric glow, with dappled rays of sunshine breaking through the lush foliage. Though the girls remain in the shaded areas of the landscape, Zandomeneghi’s skillful application of paint allows a brightness to remain nevertheless. Federico Zandomeneghi was born in Venice to a long line of neoclassical sculptors. As if created to be an artist, Zandomeneghi began his artistic education early, enrolling in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice at just 15 years old before transferring to the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. By 1862, the artist had arrived in Florence, where he became fast acquaintances with several Italian artists dedicated to executing landscape paintings en plein air. Zandomeneghi embraced the spontaneity, seeking to bring unparalleled luminosity to his works. When Zandomeneghi arrived in Paris in 1874, he found kindred spirits...

A perfect summer day. A young mother, little boy, and even smaller girl have their luncheon under a make shift 'fly' -- a stripped cloth canopy fixed up with poles.
