(Circle of) Francois LemoyneFrench 18th Century Oil On Canvas Painting Nude Woman Andromeda
This very fine rectangular oil on canvas is an old master painting depicting a naked woman in chains dressed only in pink, white and golden drapes that descend from her left shoulder, closed by a big red ruby jewel. Her long blonde loose hair is adorned with a crown of pearls. The nude woman is recognizable in the female figure of Andromeda, offered as a sacrifice to the marine monster, as descript in the original ancient poem. Andromeda, daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopea, attached to a rock on the walls of Philistia with chains waits to be saved by her beloved Perseus that will kill the sea monster who want to devour her. This high quality oil on canvas painting was probably painted by a follower of the famous painter Francois Lemoyne . The original version of this French painter is exposed at the Wallace Collection Museum in London. Our oil on canvas was probably commissioned by a private client who was particularly attracted by the sensuality of the girl or perhaps by the action of the scene, that’s why our work of art is entirely focused on Andromeda. In the original version in fact (Wallace Collection, London) the maximum of the tension is represented in the fast and powerful motion of Perseus. In order to create a single work (or a couple presumably) some differences have been made on the background compared to the Lemoyne’s painting; in this way more attention is given to the drama of Andromeda. The faithful reproduction claims the sensibility of the author in recognizing the influence that inspired Lemoyne in this work. Both the chromatic tonality and the colors used, together with Andromeda’s somatic features, recall to the Venetian and Roman pictorial techniques. The work is on the original canvas, perfectly preserved and shows slight restoration's sign just on the right side at the edge of the frame.
