ARTIST STATEMENT:
Drawing inspiration from my household consisting of two sets of twins as siblings, I visually document the mythology of 'Ibeji' meaning double birth and inseparable two in Yoruba which stand for ultimate harmony between two individuals.
Through a visual narrative and aesthetic language that is meant to reflect and empower African culture, I extend my focus beyond resemblance in appearance with the use of vibrant colors on skin figures to delineate the fraction between societies celebrating twins and rejecting them because of the perception of the twins as powerful spirit. I tend to sensitize my audience to the twin as a powerful metaphor for the dualities within a human being as well as to use the mythology of twinhood to address themes like identity, genetics, demographics, and societal issues.
