About the Item
Signed impressionist gouache on paper figures in landscape circa 1910 by French painter Eugene Galien-Laloue. The piece depicts a street scene at the Quai de la Tournelle, located along the River Seine in the Saint-Victor district of Paris. A flower seller can be seen pushing her cart along the road as a lady carrying a large hat box looks on. Trams and carts are passing down the wet road. Galien-Laloue usually executed his famous gouache and watercolour views of the streets of Paris in a standard format size of 7 x 12 inches. This example measures 11 x 18.5 inches - highly prized and rare.

Eugène Galien-Laloue was a skilled and productive artist. Particularly when working in gouache and producing small-scale works. He painted almost exclusively the most picturesque spots of Paris, notably the Grands-Boulevards. He enjoyed a considerable reputation in the early years of the 20th century. Painting in the happy pre-war period when the city was filled with omnibuses and carriages. His work evokes the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century Paris and retains a documentary value. He also painted landscapes of Normandy, Seine-et-Marne, Marseilles, Italy and Venice. In 1914 he began painting military scenes.
Galien-Laloue is known to have used various pseudonyms, among which were J. Liévin and Liévin. This raises the question of whether the painter Jacques Liévin, to whom paintings on the same themes as those of Eugène Galien-Laloue have been attributed, was also merely a pseudonym of the latter. Jacques Liévin is said to have studied under Léon Germain Pelouse in the early years of the 20th Century. While Galien-Laloue is believed to have studied under one Charles Laloue. However, no evidence of the existence of Charles Laloue has been found. To add to the mystery, while Galien-Laloue was mainly a watercolourist and gouache painter, Jacques Liévin worked mainly in oil. It is, therefore, possible that Galien-Laloue used this false identity specifically for his oil paintings.
Whether or not Jacques Liévin was real, the museums of La Rochelle, Mulhouse and Louviers attribute the following paintings - very reminiscent of Galien-Laloue's style - to him: Place de la République, Paris; Banks of the Seine; Quai Voltaire, Paris; Pont-Royal; Evening, Place de la Concorde; Oats at Angerville; Corn in Beauce.
Meanwhile, Eugene Galien Laloue exhibited under his own name from 1877 at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.

Eugene Galien-Laloue
He was born on December 11, 1854 in Montmartre, the oldest of eventually nine children. He exhibited for the first time in 1876 at the Museum of Reims, showing Le quai aux fleurs par la neige (Flower Market Along the Seine Under the Snow). The following year he exhibited for the first time at the annual Parisian Salon, showing En Normandie (In Normandy) as well as two gouaches. He preferred executing gouaches since they were less time consuming as his oils and brought comparable prices. At this time his teacher was listed as being M.C. Laloue, Claude Laloue, perhaps his late father who would have taught him a more academic approach or an uncle.
From the beginning of his career and perhaps spurred by his travels along the railway lines, Galien Laloue became interested in showing the natural environment. While not uncommon, it was perhaps an interesting theme for an artist who did not necessarily seek to connect with nature and while painting en plein-air.
He had a reclusive personality, which also may explain the reasons behind his numerous pseudonyms. He preferred the solitariness of his studio and thus did not paint his works entirely on-site. Unlike many other artists as well, he did not like to travel and many of his views of other cities or countries were inspired by postcards and photographs, an increasing tendency with many artists as photography became a more established method of use. Noë Willer further elaborates upon the unique personality of this artist (pg. 16):
Once again we mention Mr. Eugène Galien Laloue for his lovely gouaches, as full as oils, which show most picturesquely the popular quarters of Paris.
During the first two decades of the twentieth century he also exhibited at Dijon, Orléans, Versailles, Roubaix, Saint Etienne, Bordeaux, Monte Carlo, Hautecoeur, among several other cities. Galien Laloue continued to paint until 1940, when he broke the arm with which he held his brush. Despite his reluctance to integrate himself with others, his paintings offer a record of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Paris, focusing not so much on the relationship between its citizens, but more so on the architectural aspects of the city. He moved out of Paris many times to depict the landscapes of Normandy and the surroundings of Barbizon, making his home for a short time in Fontainebleau. While his Parisian scenes were often of the fall and winter, he preferred to document the landscape during the brighter months of spring and summer. He also documented life along the canals and banks of the sea and rivers, showing an interest in maritime exploits. He had become very popular with both French and especially American artists and continued to paint the same scenes of Paris throughout his career. He died in his daughter’s house in Chérence, where they had taken refuge at the beginning of the Second World War, on April 18th, 1941.

Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure and landmark paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of eighteen, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
