About the Item

After a copper engraving (46 x 34 cm) by Gilles Rousselet after Van Dyck, ca. 1640 Paris. Oil on cardboard, 44 x 35 cm Trompe-l'oeils are pictures whose depicted objects are painted so naturalistically that the viewer perceives them as actually existing. The picture reproduces in almost the same format a copperplate engraving by Gilles Rousselet after Van Dyck. Francois Xavier Vispré was a painter and graphic artist. He began his career in Paris and then moved to London, where he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1760. This painting has stylistic parallels to other works by the artist and can therefore be attributed to him. Other trompe -l'oeil paintings by Vispré are known, including another with the motif of the copper engraving and the broken glass pane. In the course of glass production in the 18th century, transparent flat glass could be produced more cheaply and was now used to frame prints. This new form of presentation had an impact on artists. Within trompe l'oeil painting, a special form developed that showed framed graphic sheets with broken frames. Trompe l'oeil. Madonna and Child St. Anthony , Old Master, 18th Century,
