These exquisite antique oil paintings by the important 19th Century German artist Georg Cornelius depict two of the five senses: Sound and Taste. In doing so the artist is consciously recalling a Classical tradition of personifying the Five Senses. Sound is presented as a female figure holding a tambourine in her left hand, while Taste is presented as a male figure holding a glass of wine in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. Both Sound and Taste are shown wearing draped robes and with a cherub by their side, shown playing the bagpipes and holding a jug and flowers respectively. There are further garlands of flowers surrounding the figures in both paintings. There is a signature reading 'G. Cornicelius' and both paintings are set within exquisite carved giltwood frames. Frames height 155cm, width 120cm Paintings height 130cm, width 94cm
