About the Item
Musa II. Beautiful woman playing an instrument and still life
was painted by Goyo in 1997. Date and signature appear in the lower left corner. It is done with acrylics in a 122 x 66.5 cm. wooden panel. Framed is 148 x 90 x 6.5 cm.
Using a classical style with renaissance reminiscences, Goyo paints a profile female portrait playing an ancient instrument. The base of the painting is made up of a still life of fruits and flowers apparently scattered on an abstract background but all the elements contribute to the overall harmony of the composition.
The panel was previously treated by the artist to give it texture before starting to apply color.
Here are a few words from the artist:
“From a very young age, I began to feel attracted by the art of painting, and as of today it continues being my greatest passion. The first thing I do when I start a painting is to cover the surface with spots of paint, lacking concrete form. Later, I calmly observe these spots and I begin to perceive images that little by little I transform into concrete forms, for example, a landscape, a fruit, figures, and faces. During this creative process, I try to respect as much as possible the expressive energy from those original spots, as they are the roots that sustain the work. I like to use different pictorial techniques: coal, graphite, watercolor, acrylic, oil…They are different paths that always convey you to the same destiny: the emotion of expressing with images your own ideas and feelings, your own life experiences”.
In 2002, Ediciones Sammer published a monograph about Goyo, the first of a collection entitled "Great Contemporary Artist" which has 240 pages as well as reproductions from most of his work from its beginning until publication. Musa II appears published on page 132 and a detail on page 133.
That same year, The Spanish Philatelic Postal and Telegraphic Service issued a beautiful series of eight self-adhesive stamp depicting reproductions of eight works by Goyo Domínguez which have "music" as a common theme, as well as a stamp to commemorate Christmas.

Goyo Dominguez
Goyo Dominguez, a Spanish-born painter, is a romantic realist who paints figuratively with a unique sense of vision, beauty and imagination. His compositions, depicted with great technical skill and style, are compelling and serene, often with enchanting subject matters. Dominguez spent his formative years studying for the priesthood, which later was to have a profound effect on his work. He gave up his vocation to devote himself entirely to painting and studied Fine Arts at Madrid’s Complutense University. The demanding self-disciplines of his ecclesiastical upbringing and training reveal themselves in his natural intellectual ability to assimilate the history and culture of his homeland and to portray these roots in an ordered harmony of form and color His fascination with works of the 16th and 17th centuries inspires his favorite themes, still life, the human body and landscape. The intriguing result is a contemporary fusion of Renaissance Europe and the Classical World, often combined with elements of the abstract, transcending the classical past and the present day.
