About
‘Tircis et Amarante’ by Henri-Pierre Picou (1824-1895). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1890. It hangs in its original neoclassical Palladian exhibition frame. The characters of Tircis and Amarante appear in Jean de la Fontaine’s fable of ‘The Shepherd who played the Flute’ in which Tircis attempts to catch the attention of Amarante by showing her that he can catch fish with just his flute-playing rather than with rod and line. In a triumph of practicality over romance, Tircis, having failed to catch anything, resorts to using a net. But it is too late; Amarante is unimpressed and admits she is already in love with another. All our paintings are sold in the finest condition they can be for their age having been professionally cleaned, conserved and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary. Henri-Pierre Picou studied in Paris with both Paul Delaroche and later Charles Gleyre and in 1847 made his debut at the Salon. The following year he was awarded a medal for his painting of ‘Cleopatra on the Cydnus’, widely considered to be “among the seven or eight most important paintings of the Salon" that year. Picou established his own atelier on the Boulevard de Magenta in Paris producing fashionable portraits and historical subjects. As his style evolved, Picou’s work developed more allegorical and mythological themes. From 1848 Henri-Pierre Picou exhibited at the Paris Salon almost annually until the year before his death in 1895.
