About the Item
Antique French landscape oil painting/figurative oil painting of a woman at the edge of the water by Pierre Garnier, signed in the bottom left P. Garnier. This exceptional figurative painting is an oil on stretched canvas, most likely painted at the end of the 19th century. The canvas is slightly undulating, mostly due to the thicknesses of paint creating a lush piece of art with incredible depth. A woman sits by the river, her hat and the overhanging trees shade her from the sun while she reads her book. Beyond, through the branches of the trees, you can just make out the red clay roof top of a house. In the fore, a bed of clumpy bright green dotted about by the artist nicely grounds the woman in the landscape, where your eye first lands but at the same time, you are drawn to the reflections in the river which adds a peaceful element and where, if you close your eyes, you can just about here the gentle sound of running water...

Overall size: 22.5ins x 19.5ins or 57cms x 49cms
Date: Late 1800's
Condition: The painting is in overall good antique condition, but you should expect imperfections throughout. There are three small renovations on the back of the canvas. Minor imperfections on the canvas, such as missing paint There is some thinning of the canvas and the canvas undulates slightly. The frame is most likely the original, again you should expect imperfections throughout, a few woodworm holes, so I have treated the whole frame. There have been renovations to the frame in the past as well as missing moulding, wear and tear at the corners etc.
Signed: P. Garnier - Pierre Garnier (1847 - 1937) He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons in 1862 and studied under Reignier. He exhibited in Lyons from 1872 and in Paris from 1896, chiefly still-life compositions of fruit and flowers. His work is signed P. Garnier.
