New York, Heterodoxy, Malvina Hoffman and Ida S. Proper, December 1912.
Born in Bonaparte, Iowa, Ida Proper was the fourth of six children. She pursued her studies at Bethany College in Kansas. By working at a library in Seattle, she was able to save enough funds to relocate to New York, where she became part of the Art Students League. By the year 1899, she had made her way back to Kansas and was teaching art at Ottawa University. By 1900, Proper was displaying her oil paintings in Iowa.
Proper received a fellowship from the Art Students League to pursue her studies in Western Europe in 1903 and focused on her education in Germany. She came back to New York for the 1905 term, where she instructed art at St. Mary’s Seminary in Burlington, New Jersey, for a one-year period. During this same year, she created portraits of two former governors of the state, which were subsequently displayed in the New Jersey Statehouse. In 1906, she taught art at the Ladies Baptist College of Bristol, Virginia.
Once the term concluded, Proper traveled to Paris to continue her education and stayed there for four years. Her artwork "Five O'Clock Tea" was exhibited at the 1910 Salon in Paris.
She came back from Europe in 1911 and promptly joined a suffrage parade in New York City alongside 3,000 fellow participants. In 1912, sculptor Malvina Hoffman and another member of their collective launched their own art gallery in New York City. However, the business did not turn out to be as lucrative as the women had anticipated. That same year, she took on the role of editor for The Woman Voter, leveraging her connections with artists in New York to gather contributions for the publication. The Woman Voter was produced by the New York branch of the American Woman Suffrage Association. In 1912, she also became one of the founding members of Heterodoxy, a feminist organization established in Greenwich Village that gathered every other Saturday to engage in discussions on a wide range of topics.
In 1915, she displayed her artwork at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition. As the movement for suffrage gained momentum, she participated in the Fourth of July parade in New York alongside other notable suffragists. Together with a group of women artists who were also advocates for suffrage, Proper coordinated an art exhibition at William Macbeth's galleries for that fall. The artists pledged half of their sales proceeds to the New York State suffrage campaign. During the suffrage parade later that month, she marched in the attire of a washerwoman, holding a sign that proclaimed, "If politics are dirty, send for the cleaning woman. " As the statewide vote on women's suffrage was nearing, Proper rode the subway in New York with fellow suffragists, carrying "lapboards" advocating for women's suffrage. Additionally, Proper initiated a suffrage poster competition in New York to promote the impending vote on the women's suffrage amendment.
The award for the top design amounted to $50, and it was required that the phrase "Vote for the Woman Suffrage Amendment, November 2, 1915" be incorporated into the design. Proper was selected to oversee the contest and exhibition due to her role as the chair of the art committee for the Woman's Suffrage Campaign.
Proper was employed at the University of Puerto Rico from 1919 until 1922. Around 1925 or 1926, she relocated to Monhegan Island, where she purchased a house, served as town clerk, and ran an art school. In 1930, she authored and released a historical account of the island, titled "Monhegan, the Cradle of New England".

This painting depicts the artist's wife at the loom, producing textile versions of Hoffman's underwater paintings. The screen shown behind Bea is an underwater scene also painted by Hoffman. The study of this painting is held in the collection of the Wolfsonian Museum in Florida.
Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien.
In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists' colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony.
In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman's antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks. In 1910 Hoffman...
