Ioana Baltan
Nightmare - figurative, blue brush strokes on canvas, Medium Modern Contemporary

2019

About the Item

Developed in London in 2019 and 2020, this project focuses on the idea of dreaming, and although the emerging compositions are closed and defined they are also very dynamic and vibrant. The images are made with a mixed technique of oil and acrylic paint on canvas, and the resulting aspect is established through powerful brush strokes and transparencies. These works are not limited by a fixed or particular chromatic range, the artist strives to explore new values and nuances. Ioana combines figurative painting with abstract elements to create characters that are presented sometimes in a very clear and detailed environment or totally abstract circumstances. These elements are used by the artist to illustrate how fragile the memory is during the dream state. Some of the secondary themes are psychological disorders, hallucination, insomnia, and lucid dreaming. Sports pitches, sunflowers, bathrooms, and doors are just some symbols taken from the artist's dreams while the characters present are either inspired by people the artist knows or strangers from day-to-day life.
