About the Item
Belgian Symbolist artist Jan Frans DeBoever (1872 - 1948), created symbolist/allegorical paintings throughout his lifetime. He centralized on allegorical and literary subjects, generally depicting the constant struggle of good vs. evil. This is consistently reflected by images of beautiful women interacting with skeletons, gargoyles and demons.
La Danse Macabre, is one of hte rare paintings based on Baudelaire's famous suite of poems, Les Fleur du Mal.
A fully mixed media work, the painting depicts a group of dancing skeletons, all holding hands with the exception of one who has fallen and cowers on the rocks. Another skeleton can be seen playing the violin on the mountain side, providing the music for the dance.
This is the original painting, a mixed media work, signed, executed c.1912, one of the rarest examples discovered by Jan Frans DeBoever. The painting resides within the original artists frame.
