Jan Miel (1599 in Beveren-Waas, Belgium – April 1664 in Turin, Italy) was a Flemish painter and engraver who was active in Italy.
He joined the fashionable group of Dutch and Flemish genre painters in Rome who are referred to as the 'Bamboccianti' and were known for their scenes depicting the lower classes in Rome. He then moved on painted historical subject matters in a classical manner.
The painting on offer depicts a well painted hunting party with horses and hounds, resting by some impressing ruins. Jan Miel is well known to have painted various variations on this subject matter.
Verso there is the stenciled Christie's Inventory number - According to Christie's London, this painting was owned by the dealer William Sabin (Sabin Galleries Ltd) and sold as Lot 34 on the 18th of December 1964 in London, described as ‘ J. Miel ‘, to the collector B. Cohen for 57 guineas. The painting resurfaces newly framed in 2020, when I purchased the painting out of a deceased Estate in Bern, Switzerland.
The RKD (The Netherlands Institute for Art History) has, based on photographs, dated the painting to the 17th century. A well respected Swiss auction house seconded that dating.
The old, handwoven canvas of painting has been relined (post 1964), remounted on the original stretcher and framed in a 20th century antique style wood frame, which presents very well.
Considering the close compositional analogy to other, well-known works by Jan Miel, it's style and quality, the age of materials and of course the Christie's provenance, I offer for this fine - alas unsigned - painting a somewhat loose attribution to the 17th century Flemish painter Jan Miel himself and a firm attribution to Jan Miels closer 17th century circle. With some further research/expertise, a firm attribution to Jan Miel (1599- 1663) might become possible. This however, will be the future owner's quest.

Delightful, very detailed painting of a little piece of summery subtropical wilderness along a small, winding stream and some overgrown buildings beyond, somewhere in the hills above the costal Comune of Ospedaletti (respectively ‘Spiareti’ in Ligurian), which is a small village in the province of Imperia in the Italian region of Liguria, about 120 kilometres southwest of Genoa.
The little stream somewhere above Ospedaletti was a favoured subject of the artist and various scenes painted in oil and water colour exist. For example a similar oil was sold this year in May as Lot by Gardner Galleries in Ontario, Canada.
The oil painting on offer today is extremely detailed and finely executed and I suggest it might well is based on the plein air water colour study, which recently surfaced in England this year (Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers, England / 4th of April, 2023 / Lot 180) and was probably painted in the artist’s studio on return from one of his travels.
C. J. Way was born on the 25th of July in 1835 and travelled as far as to north America and Canada, as well as locally in England and Wales and to Europe, mainly Italy and the Swiss Alps to paint his scenic landscapes for which he is famous for.
Initially a water colour artist, but from about 1870 on he also began to paint in oils.
Way received his artistic training from a very early age at Somerset House in London, then at the Central School of Art in Marlborough House and finishing at the South Kensington School of Art under Sir Richard Redgrave, to graduate in 1858 as an artist and instructor.
He then moved to Montreal in Canada and established a studio, where he taught drawing and painting as well as taking on commissions as a colourist for the photographer William Notman...

A most pleasant depiction of a typical ‘Stöckli’ in bright sunshine with the a few shirts on the washing line, somewhere in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland. Such small cottages would sit next to the large farmhouses and upon retirement the old couple would move into it, to make room for the next generation to take up residence in the main building and run the farm.
The Painting is in pleasingly good and clean condition, with no damage or restoration
