About the Item

JEAN SOUVERBIE (1891-1981) DEUX BAIGNEUSES, 1965 Signed lower left Titled & dated verso Signed lower left Titled & dated verso Souverbie painted compositions of figures, especially female figures, and of nudes, which resembled Picasso’s contemporary ‘Pompeiian’ figures. However, the influence of Poussin gave his figures a monumental constructive equilibrium, and his brush with the Nabis and Fauvism lent colour to his version of Cubism. Jean Souverbie was initially inspired by Poussin and by the Roman ruins in Provence. He was then directly influenced by the Nabis, although his use of colour aligned him with Fauvism. He discovered Cubism in around 1920 through the work of Georges Braque, who influenced his still-lifes. He saw in Cubism the possibility of a renewal of classical art. L'inspiré Self Portrait Marc Chagall Valentina Vava Lithograph 1963 Mourlot 398
By Marc Chagall
Located in Eversholt, Bedfordshire
Inspiration or L'inspiré - The artist and his wife, self-portrait. This is a self-portrait of the great artist, depicting him as lost in thought before one of his paintings, which is apparently related to his home country Russia, as suggested by the small figure in the lower right of the work. Chagall’s wife Valentina (“Vava”), who was also from Russia, is looking over his shoulder, full of longing. The small surreal elements that are characteristic of Chagall’s paintings are also present here: the silhouettes of the houses that seems to stick out of the painting and a figure with a flute or trombone standing on its head. Chagall Lithographe, Volume II of the catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographic work, see Mourlot 398, 1957-1962, Paris 1963, imprinted by Imprimerie Mourlot for the publisher André Sauret. A lithographic plate from the catalog that was published in 10,000 copies. Amoureuses by Grégoire Mathias — Acrylic — Bold Cubist Portrait of Two Women
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Amoureuses (Women in Love) Acrylic on Canvas 41 x 33 cm In Amoureuses, Greg Mathias delivers an emotionally charged dual portrait that merges bold modernism with raw intimacy. Two female figures emerge from a tapestry of angular lines, fragmented planes, and vibrant contrasts. Black contours define and disrupt the forms, while saturated reds, yellows, and earth tones highlight the figures' lips, hair, and eyes with almost theatrical intensity. Mathias’s Diachronic Cubism is palpable in this compact yet powerful composition. The faces appear to hold more than one emotional state or temporal expression, inviting the viewer to imagine multiple layers of affection, memory, or desire unfolding across time. The figures are both stylized and expressive—unified yet distinct—suggesting a narrative of closeness, duality, or romantic introspection. Executed in acrylic on canvas, this smaller-format work makes an immediate impact and is well-suited for collectors of contemporary figurative cubism. It’s a standout piece for those interested in bold color palettes, emotional resonance, and distinctive portraits with modern edge. Perfect for: Collectors of modern figurative cubism, lovers of expressive portraiture, and buyers seeking a compact yet high-impact artwork. Ideal for interiors emphasizing bold lines, vibrant colors, and character-driven contemporary art.
