In this painting, Jessica Benjamin uses abstract brushstrokes and color to express the idea of remembering and question the purpose of portraiture. Through the abstraction and obscured face the little girl depicted becomes a story continually changing and never quite told.
Jessica Benjamin was born in Bloomington, IL and graduated from the New York Academy of Art with his MFA in 2014.
Her paintings have been featured on the cover and interiors of three albums by Wynton Marsalis, “From the Plantation to the Penitentiary”(2007), “He and She” (2009), and “Ever Fonky Lowdown” (2020). Her paintings are in several public collections and have been featured in the Southampton Art Museum in Southampton, New York.
Her work has been shown internationally, including New York, Giverny, France, and Spain.

The artist describes this piece as many of her others where, “the elements of the painting are arranged in a way that evokes a feeling, like the stanzas in a poem.” This painting was featured in a series of NFT’s (available soon) and an animation depicting love during WWI.
