About the Item

John Button View: Arcade, 1975 Gouache on Paper (Framed with prestigious Fischbach and Kornblee Gallery Labels) 20 1/2 × 24 1/2 inches Signed and dated on the front This is a unique painting Frame included: held in the original 1970s artist's period frame with prestigious labels This 1970s John Button gouache bears labels from renowned Jill Kornblee as well as Fischbach Galleries in Manhattan - the latter being the original gallery of record for Alex Katz for many years. Button was a well respected and accomplished representational artist part of the New York School of Painters and Poets, who had befriended Fairfield Porter and Frank O'Hara when he sadly died in 1982 at the young age of only 53. Measurements: Framed: 25" x 30" x .5 Artwork (visible) 20.5" x 24.5" John Button, 1929-1982, was known for his cityscapes -"probably our greatest painter of urban landscape since Hopper." - (Gerrit Henry - Art In America) and his small travel pictures -"These small works would assure the artisit a certain reputatation if he had produced nothing else." (New York Times - Hilton Kramer) More about John Button: Born in California, John Button (1929 - 1982) was educated at U of C Berkeley. After moving to New York City in the early 1950s he became friends with Fairfield Porter and Frank O'Hara and assumed his part in the New York School of Painters and Poets. Amidst the frenzy of Abstract Expressionism, Button remained true to his interest in realism, and is now most commonly associated with such New York School artists as Fairfield Porter, Jane Freilicher, and Alex Katz. Concerning Button, Bill Berkson has written: "The scaled-up perceptual intimacy his best paintings assert is part of what the realist wing of the New York School developed, beginning in the ‘50s, as a counterthrust to – as well as an absorption of – abstraction’s headlong specifyings of applied paint.” John Button was a fine draftsman and drew from life models throughout his career. However, little known are his sketches of male nudes – studio models from the School of Visual Arts, where Button taught, as well as personal acquaintances. Tim Dlugos writes: “The setting and the artist’s tools are as stripped down as the models: a naked man, a pencil, and a sheet of paper. Button creates erotic tension in these drawings not by addition…but by a remarkable effective process of subtraction.”
