About the Item
A colorful oil painting of the crowd entering Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby horse race by American artist John Potter Wheat (1920-1980). Wheat was born in New York City, studied at the Art Students League at the Yale School of Fine Arts, with a Masters of Fine Arts degree. He was known for his landscapes and painted murals throughout his life- for the OSS in WWII and murals relating historical events in, among other places, Keokuk, Iowa (South Central Bank in Keokuk)- with a huge mural depicting the city's role in the westward expansion of the country. He also painted numerous murals depicting historical events for movie theaters and other venues. He was also the official combat artist in Vietnam for the Office of the Chief of Military History, Department of the Army. Oil on artist board, signed lower right, and housed in a molded distressed wooden frame. Dimensions: 22 in H x 27.5 in W, actual; 31 in H x 36.38 in W, framed.
