BIOGRAFIA DEL ARTISTA:
Hijo del también pintor y orfebre Jaume Mercadé (1887-1967), nació en Barcelona en 1923 y se formó en el taller de Ramon Rogent, donde conoció a Joan Ponç, quien le introdujo en los movimientos de vanguardia. Inicialmente cezanniana y cubista en su concepto y construcción, su pintura evolucionó hacia una abstracción de fuerte gesto caligráfico, llena de pasión y energía que con el paso de los años se fue mitigando, aun manteniendo una impronta expresionista.
Pero Jordi fue algo más que un pintor, fue alguien que vivió su época intensamente, con pasión y bohemia: en 1946, y junto a Arnau Puig, Brossa, Ponç, Boadella y Tormo, creó la renovadora revista Algol; en 1948 fue miembro promotor del Saló d'Octubre y se instaló en París, donde residió hasta 1954, becado por el Gobierno francés; a su regreso a Barcelona expuso en la Galeria Syra y participó junto a Aleu, Guinovart, Cuixart, Muixart, Tharrats y Tàpies en la fundación del efímero grupo Taüll, el único momento (fotográfico) en que coincidieron las figuras más destacadas de la abstracción catalana.A partir de entonces realizó múltiples exposiciones individuales y colectivas en Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza, Milán, Berna, etcétera, impulsó el Saló de Maig y representó a España en las Bienales de São Paulo, Alejandría y en los parisienses salones "des jeunes peintres", "nationale des Beaux Arts" e "indépendents", un dinamismo que todavía se manifestaba en la década de los ochenta, cuando junto a J. J. Tharrats, apoyó el nacimiento de la Associació Catalana d'Artistes Plàstics.
Su última aparición pública como artista fue en 1999 con la exposición La pintura com a hipòtesi d'existència, comisariada por Assumpta Rosés, que a través de 80 pinturas ofrecía una visión retrospectiva de su trayectoria y que se presentó en el Centre d'Art Santa Mónica de Barcelona y en el Museu de Valls, por los vínculos paternos que le unían a esta población del Alt Camp.
Una carrera especialmente interesante en los años cuarenta y cincuenta por encarnar el tránsito de la figuración a la abstracción, de la que entre otros se han ocupado críticos tan destacados como Sebastià Gasch, Arnau Puig, Santos Torroella, Alberto del Castillo, Maria Lluïsa Borràs, Rodríguez Aguilera, Gaya Nuño, J. E. Cirlot o C. Areán, que sin embargo no pudieron evitar que, a pesar de ser protagonista de un momento histórico, la aportación de Jordi quedara desdibujada en la artigrafía contemporánea, a lo que quizá también contribuyó su propia negligencia
