About the Item

Joshua Shaw Summer Picnic by the River, circa 1840 Signed lower right Oil on canvas 15 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches Born in Bellingborough, Lincolnshire, England, Joshua Shaw became known for painting beautiful countryside scenes that featured dark foregrounds, figures, streams, and faraway hills. He was one of the first artists in America to focus only on landscapes, and his art was similar to the idealized nature scenes created by Claude Lorraine in the 17th century, which often showed people resting in nature. However, this style became less popular when artists from the French Barbizon School began to paint more realistic scenes of people at work. John Baur, Curator and Director at the Whitney Museum of American Art, talked about a group of ‘pure’ landscape artists, which included George Harvey, Robert Salmon, Charles Birch, and Charles Codman. He mentioned that they were not well-known painters but were skilled at using delicate grades of color and tone. He described them as the lyrical poets of America’s countryside, being very sensitive to its feelings and moods. Shaw stayed in England until he turned 41. He grew up in a poor family, and he learned to draw and handle guns by himself as a kid. He first worked as a helper for a sign painter but mostly taught himself how to paint. This time in his life was described as having many ups and downs. He did signs in Manchester and also painted portraits, landscapes, and other types of art. His talent was recognized, and he showed some of his paintings at the Royal Academy in London when he was just 22 years old. In 1817, he moved to Philadelphia after being hired to manage the setting up of Benjamin West’s painting, Christ Healing the Sick, at the Pennsylvania Hospital. He also wanted to move to America to live for two years, so he could get a patent for his invention of a copper percussion cap for guns, which took him long to be recognized for and profit from. In December 1819, Shaw and his teenage son embarked on a watercolor project. Their work was later turned into a book called Picturesque Views of American Scenery, which was published in 1820 and illustrated by John Hill. They traveled to South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia, capturing various scenes, including the burning of Savannah, Georgia, on January 11, 1820, as well as sights along the Reedy River and at Table Rock in South Carolina. In North Carolina, they painted the Catawba River, and in Virginia, they focused on Natural Bridge and Harper’s Ferry. Alongside their painting work, they also collected information for a United States Directory, which came out in 1822. After returning to Philadelphia, Joshua Shaw created over 200 oil paintings. When he arrived there, he needed to find his style because there was no formal school for landscape painting. He started the Artists’ Fund Society and the Artists and Amateur Association, and he displayed his work at the Pennsylvania Academy. He also wrote a guide for artists, and as an inventor, he made improvements to gun designs and created early topographic maps.
