Shaped wooden frame, ebonized and gilded parts
Mostly active in his hometown Valladolid, Juan Alfonso Abril trained in the workshop of Pablo de Céspedes in Cordoba, before turning to monastic life. In the foreground, flanked by the sword with which it was severed, is the head of St Paul, the apostle who was martyred by decapitation in Rome. The composition, based on a close-up view in dialogue with the spectator, and the iconographic choice of depicting the face with open exhaling lips have led to the work being attributed to Juan Alfonso Abril, a painter active in Valladolid in the 17th century. The painting comes from the Luigi Koelliker Collection.
