About the Item
Cette petite huile de Jules Alexandre Grün (1868-1938) représente deux jeunes Bretonnes assises dans l'herbe, vêtues du costume traditionnel de Fouesnant.
Il s'agit d'une petite esquisse portant en bas à droite le cachet d'atelier du peintre : "Grün". Elle détonne dans la production de cet artiste surtout connu pour sa grande toile "Un vendredi au Salon des artistes français" (1911, musée des beaux-arts de Rouen), ainsi que pour ses natures mortes, ses illustrations pour la presse et ses affiches. Notons qu'il a toutefois représenté une autre Bretonne en costume traditionnel sur l'affiche qu'il a réalisée en 1901 pour les chemins de fer de l'ouest.
Rapidement exécutée, cette petite pochade a pu être croquée sur le vif. Plus qu'aux visages de ses modèles, le peintre s'est intéressé à rendre leurs costumes : coiffe à ailettes, collerette, tablier et sabots font ainsi partie du folklore breton qui attira les peintres en Bretagne à la fin du 19e siècle et au tournant du 20e siècle.
