About the Item
The painting is called Craps, but it's really not about craps. First of all, the setting is the door of Gregory Grammar School, where I went to school and painted often. It's part of my memory. But it stands for a lot more that just memory. Who was I in those days? That's me standing there in the front, facing away, and all the guys are in the corner playing craps. It's not about craps but about me not playing craps. It's me as an outsider. Me watching, or not watching. Knowing its going on but I'm not involved. I felt like an outsider when I was a young kid. I didn't participate in many of the games that the other guys played. I didn't play sports. I didn't do the other kinds of things they did. So there's an environment in which this was occurring and me being part of this sense of isolation, of separation, of being different from the other kids. It's something you don't want to think about too much. As an adult I never felt that. I worked. I participated in all the activities of the job. But when I was a kid I felt different. I was interested in things these other kids where not interested in. I had friends, but only one or two friends who were close. When the other kids were playing basketball, I'd go out there and try to play, but I never felt like I was really playing Looking at this painting reminds me of all those experiences. - Leopold Segedin
