Measurements with frame: 87 x 69 cm
The Ademollian tempera, which can be dated roughly between the first and third decades of the 19th century, illustrates two episodes of war and morality extracted from the life of the leader of Boeotia, the Theban Pelopidas, whose biography is included in the Plutarchean Greek text of the Parallel Lives, so much in vogue in the 18th-century cultural milieu as a summa of ethical and moral values.
The central full-color episode depicts the meeting of the Greek states in Susa at the court of the Persian king Artaxerxes, which Pelopidas also attended as ambassador to demand the disarmament of the Athenian fleet but to no avail. Ademollo misquotes Xerxes I, father of Artaxerxes, in the caption, however, correctly reporting the episode whose source for the artist is with great certainty chapter XXX of the life of Pelopidas in Plutarch
In contrast, the second episode, painted in the grisaille frieze below, depicts the scene described by Plutarch in chapter XXXIV in which Pelopidas' lifeless body is brought back by Thessaly's allies after the Thessalian-Theban armies clashed with the Athenian-Spartan armies at the Battle of Mantinea in 362 BCE.
