"Apollo" Chase Finlay Ballet Dancer - Figurative Abstract on Paper
This dynamic figurative abstract painting by Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947) depicts ballet dancer, Chase Finlay, previously of the New York City Ballet, performing in the ballet, Apollo. He leaps into the soft blue air, with a shimmering golden lute held high above his head.
Apollo is a neoclassical ballet in two tableaux composed between 1927 and 1928 by Igor Stravinsky. It was choreographed in 1928 by twenty-four-year-old George Balanchine, with the composer contributing the libretto. The scenery and costumes were designed by André Bauchant, with new costumes by Coco Chanel in 1929.
Image is signed, dated and titled along the bottom edge, "Chase Finlays 'Apollo' Grant 2011".
Presented in a soft gray mat.

Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947) is an artist from San Diego, CA who began showing his art at 13 years old. This led to becoming San Diego Museum’s Art Guild’s youngest member. He attended San Francisco State University in 1965, to study printmaking under John Ihle and Dennis Beal. Throughout college, Marc taught silk screening classes in his Potero Hill painting studio and worked at Museum West—an arm of New York Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Later he became the Display Director at Design Research International. He later attended the Brighton School of Art and Design in England for graduate work in printmaking.
In 1973, Marc joined his wife Jeanne’s fledging dress business. The couple moved the enterprise from England, back to San Francisco where they opened their first shop, “Jeanne-Marc”, in North Beach. Under the same label they sold their small sportswear collection to high-end specialty stores, including I. Magnin, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman as well as to stores in Europe and Japan. In 1991, both Marc and Jeanne were elected to the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America).

The selection of Abd Elmalak’s drawings is reflective of a compositional method that is based on free-flowing and distinct lines and contours that he uses to amalgamate caricature-Esque female figures with monuments and landmarks from his travels, script, animals, and natural elements into interconnected and unified tapestries. His selected paintings explore themes of entrapment, companionship, oppression, emancipation, and faith, which he explores and animate through his demure and virtuous women subjects...
