This nocturnal painting by Marc Tanguy depicts a landscape under a deep, dark sky. The work is imbued with a mysterious, contemplative atmosphere.
Tanguy uses an expressive mixed media painting technique, emphasizing the effects of transparency and superimposed colors. The shapes of the trees are not precisely defined; rather, they are suggested by touches of deep, dark colors, mixed with greens, blues and purples. The lack of precise detail contributes to the dreamlike, poetic quality of the scene. The way light is suggested, rather than explicitly depicted, reinforces this sense of mystery. The background, a deep night sky rich in shades of blue-black, dominates the painting. It encompasses the trees, linking them to the entire landscape and accentuating their absorption in darkness.
The work evokes a sense of isolation, tranquility and even melancholy. The blackness of the sky and the darkness of the trees create an atmosphere of mystery and introspection. The absence of human figures accentuates this sense of solitude. One might imagine a deep, silent forest, a place of contemplation or meditation.
The dark, haunting beauty of the landscape invites the viewer to personal introspection and silent communion with nature. The very mystery of the work is one of the keys to its expressive power.

Marc Tanguy is a french artist who was born in 1959. He studied at the Beaux Arts of Paris (ENSBA) and at the National School of Arts Deco (ENSAD) also in Paris where he met and worked with Zao Wou Ki. His paintings are collected all over the world and he has been exhibited mainly in France then England and China. Today and beside his painter activity, he teaches at the National Art Deco School of Paris. Landscapes are one of his favourite subjects where he explores nature in many different ways. Boundaries between the image and the the paint melt together in sensitive and organic abstractions. Atmospheres, lights, colors and touches are mixed in an open and very poetic space.
Lyrism is something you feel in his work lightenned by the inspiration of Nature.
Marc is passionate about art and art history. His influences are wide and we can feel Claude Monet's light and Pierre Bonnard in the use of colors.
On canvas or on paper with his watercolors, Marc Tanguy shows a real proficiency in the use of colors and his compositions are like joyful open windows.

My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces.
Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance.
My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry.
There is nothing “new...
