About Artist
Tendo Maria was born in 1996 in the city of Kampala, Uganda.
Tendo Maria's work reflects her past, present, and memories highlighting her personal experiences and her relationships to her community including elements like different color hairstyles, and trends from her community connecting around the world.. Her work confronts traditional depictions of the black body, the works offer convectional depictions of her as a black woman.
The concepts behind Tendo's artworks highlight confidence through the color of the hair and skin tone. "Colors" of hair in my work signifies a breed of black people that are not limited to social, cultural, historical, or political constraints. It is expressing a selfless, free, and unapologetic black woman.
Tendo holds a diploma in computer engineering at the Management Training and Advisory Center Nakawa. (Uganda).
