About the Item
Passageway North Africa was executed during Walter’s extensive travels throughout Spain, Northern Africa, and the Dalmatian coast. These works are magnificent snapshots –pictorial post cards—of Martha Walter’s search for distinctive and unusual national and ethnic subjects. Her scenes of North Africa recorded in plein air the local architecture and inhabitants are particularly sought after even today due to their scarcity, according to the art historian William Gerdts. Her time in North Africa was cut short when she was commissioned to paint a portrait of the Queen of Spain.
Martha Walter is one of our earliest women artists of note to devote herself to art and having a career. This was due to the fact that she had financial means to support herself in this endeavor.
Small works like this in a home enliven imagination and content in smaller spots - creating dialogue and intrigue.
Walter was a student of William Merritt Chase and was considered one of his most talented students. When she later took a trip to France she was enthralled and inspired by the Impressionist techniques and she immediately pivoted from a darker, old Master approach to this new way of working. She was so talented she could quickly create her content with well placed strokes of color - the sign of a truly proficient artist.
This is in a fine leafed frame, deeper brown patina, hand carved.
The artwork inside the frame is 7.25 x 5.25 inches

Martha Walter
Walter was born in Philadelphia in 1875. She enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she studied under William Merritt Chase, who became her primary mentor. At his insistence, she entered a number of Academy student competitions and eventually won a prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarship in 1908. This award enabled her to travel throughout Europe, where she continued her art education at the Grande Julien in Paris. Soon disenchanted with the academicism of the Parisian schools, Walter set out on her own and began producing plein-air paintings in the manner of the French Impressionists. At the outbreak of World War I, she returned to the United States and took up painting at various East coast beach resorts such as Coney Island and Gloucester. In her beach scenes of this period, colorful bathing suits, gowns and umbrellas punctuate a tranquil, pastel surface. Her expertise in the treatment of light and shadow is evident in her depictions of these settings at various times of day.
In 1922, she spent some months painting the thousands of immigrants kept in the detention hall at Ellis Island. The dreadful, crowded conditions inspired a group of paintings that were exhibited that year in the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris. One was selected for the permanent collection of the Musée de Luxembourg. An exhibition at the Art Club of Chicago in 1941 featured a group of watercolor paintings inspired by the artist's travels through Spain and North Africa. These works were intensely colored visions of such subjects as Algerian street scenes, mosques and Spanish fishermen.
Walter worked well into her nineties, continuing to paint portraits of women and children, beach scenes, gardens and marketplaces. Before her death in 1976, she had exhibited widely, and her works are included in major national and international private and public collections. Hammer Galleries had several exhibitions of her work during her lifetime, the last taking place in 1975 when the artist was one hundred years old.

Woman, Yellow Shawl and Fan
Located in Greenwich, CT
An impressive and masterful depiction of a young woman with a fan. An American artist who studied and traveled in Europe and painted this painting before his return. It has its original frame which is magnificent. The frame has been regilded in th past 10 years. Vinton was abroad in the 1880s. The sitter gazes coyly over her fan in a gesture that ladies and gentleman of fin-de-siècle Europe would have understood to mean “wait for me,” and perhaps indicating her interest in a potential suitor. Vinton embarked on several trips to Europe—to Spain in 1882 with William Merritt Chase and Robert Blum, and to several different countries in 1888 following his marriage—which provided inspiration for a renewed style and subject matter. While in Spain with Chase and Blum, the three artists visited Madrid and Toledo; there, Vinton studied the masterfully tenebrous portraits of Velázquez, an influence that can be seen in Portrait with Yellow Shawl...

Impressionistic style watercolor, drawing, pastel on paper, from the artist Estate.
DeWitt Lockman began painting at the age of four in Brooklyn. By the age of seven, his family had moved to New York, where he worked with the animal painter James H. Beard. He later studied with Nelson Bickford and William Sartain. He was in Europe, principally in France, England, and Holland, from 1891 to 1892 and again from 1901 to 1902. In the years between the two European trips, Lockman painted little, suffering from ill-health. Resuming his artistic activities in the early years of the century, Lockman also served in the Office of Naval Intelligence from 1917 to 1918. He married Evelyn Walker in 1946. Although his oeuvre also includes still life and animal pictures, Lockman was most successful as a portraitist, painting over 500 works in that genre. President Calvin Coolidge, General of the Armies John J. Pershing, and Dr. Nicholas Murray...
