What makes an artist a failure?
While strolling through the Metropolitan I was viewing the wing piece of a more extensive altar and observed words etched into the golden grounds.
This had a profound resonance with me because of my fascination and utilization of words in all of my work.
Next I visited the Cloisters and stood transfixed in front of Robert Campion’s “Annunciation”
Of particular interest was the lovely white lily that indicates Mary’s purity.
On this same sojourn I witnessed the line out the door and around the block of people waiting to get into a contemporary artist’s retrospective. Is that success?

Artist Statement:
Though we don’t generally think about it, thirteenth-century religious art actually reflects medieval European perceptions of events that occurred in the ancient Middle East. In the Divine Beauty project I filter sacred iconography through the secular lens of today’s societal perceptions by placing found commercial fashion imagery (from magazines and other sources) in the context of painted religious narratives, producing a clash of ideas that throw both sources into question.
Like many Western New Yorkers, I was raised Catholic. I attended a Catholic elementary school, went to church every day. While the indoctrination didn’t last beyond childhood, it did instill a lifelong affinity for the visual traditions of sacred art. But, as the recent economic meltdown has made apparent, conspicuous global consumption has replaced western religion today as the favored path to personal fulfillment. 'Persistence' is an original mixed media painting on rough-cut aluminum by American artist and appraiser Kelly Butenhoff. In the image, Butenhoff shows a yellow figure against a blue background; however, the painting is even more about the material of paint and metal than it is about figuration. Recalling the figurative paintings of Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning, the work is constructed of built-up textured layers, their rough surface mirrored by the irregular border of the aluminum sheet support.
These same colors are seen in the Ukrainian flag. Yellow and blue represent Ukraine’s wheat fields below the blue skies and mountains. All proceeds of this sale will be donated to help Ukrainian refugees.

After studying abroad, Kelly graduated from Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin, with a BFA in Fine Art and Commercial Art. Her career in the art world began with the prestigious David Barnett Gallery in Wisconsin. Simultaneously exploring her own artistic accomplishments and gallery pursuits, eventually brought Kelly to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Studio E Gallery in 2001 where she held the position of Gallery Director for eleven years while launching her endeavor of concierge fine art and appraisal services. Never one to rest on her laurels, Kelly appeased an interest in appraising by attending the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at NYU, completing the intensive Art Appraising and Connoisseurship Program in 2004. These studies and internships have included in-depth research and documentation of fine and decorative arts. Courses, workshops, and seminars on fine art, decorative art, American silver 1800-1940, estate jewelry, 18th, and 19th-century furniture, and IRS legal guidelines. Her training took place in such esteemed locations as Sotheby’s, Doyle’s Auction House, Swann Auction Galleries, Hirschl & Adler, Beauvais Carpet...
