'Persistence' is an original mixed media painting on rough-cut aluminum by American artist and appraiser Kelly Butenhoff. In the image, Butenhoff shows a yellow figure against a blue background; however, the painting is even more about the material of paint and metal than it is about figuration. Recalling the figurative paintings of Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning, the work is constructed of built-up textured layers, their rough surface mirrored by the irregular border of the aluminum sheet support.
These same colors are seen in the Ukrainian flag. Yellow and blue represent Ukraine’s wheat fields below the blue skies and mountains. All proceeds of this sale will be donated to help Ukrainian refugees.

After studying abroad, Kelly graduated from Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin, with a BFA in Fine Art and Commercial Art. Her career in the art world began with the prestigious David Barnett Gallery in Wisconsin. Simultaneously exploring her own artistic accomplishments and gallery pursuits, eventually brought Kelly to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Studio E Gallery in 2001 where she held the position of Gallery Director for eleven years while launching her endeavor of concierge fine art and appraisal services. Never one to rest on her laurels, Kelly appeased an interest in appraising by attending the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at NYU, completing the intensive Art Appraising and Connoisseurship Program in 2004. These studies and internships have included in-depth research and documentation of fine and decorative arts. Courses, workshops, and seminars on fine art, decorative art, American silver 1800-1940, estate jewelry, 18th, and 19th-century furniture, and IRS legal guidelines. Jean Lowe is a California-based painter and sculptor. She creates installations and sculptural works of enamel-painted papier-mâché. Lowe earned a B.A. from UC Berkeley in 1983. She earned her MFA from UC San Diego in 1988.
She was a lecturer at UC San Diego from 1992 to 2008.
Lowe's installations are handmade, labor intensive and visually playful installations, with papier-mâché furnishings and objects juxtaposed to site specific wall painting. Lowe says of her installations, "Intellectually I am driven by an interest in challenging a status quo anthropocentric world view and formally interested in marrying that content to a 'domestic' decorative esthetic." Many of Lowe's installations have quoted 18th and 19th century French decoration, rife with romanticized images of animals and nature and imbued with a sense of class and privilege. Into this fabric she substitutes or integrate corresponding contemporary attitudes--both about our treatment of the land and its other inhabitants and our attitudes regarding decoration: the wrestling match between high and low art. Wry humor. Lowe creates sculptural representations of everyday objects using papier-mâché and enamel paint. She is known for her papier-mâché books and has created a large collection of them with evocative and amusing titles. Her work Books and Ideas in an Age of Anxiety comprises a collection of them in display cases and is situated in Byers Hall at UCSF as part of the J. Michael Bishop Art Collection at Mission Bay.

Artist Statement:
Though we don’t generally think about it, thirteenth-century religious art actually reflects medieval European perceptions of events that occurred in the ancient Middle East. In the Divine Beauty project I filter sacred iconography through the secular lens of today’s societal perceptions by placing found commercial fashion imagery (from magazines and other sources) in the context of painted religious narratives, producing a clash of ideas that throw both sources into question.
Like many Western New Yorkers, I was raised Catholic. I attended a Catholic elementary school, went to church every day. While the indoctrination didn’t last beyond childhood, it did instill a lifelong affinity for the visual traditions of sacred art. But, as the recent economic meltdown has made apparent, conspicuous global consumption has replaced western religion today as the favored path to personal fulfillment.
