Persian Illuminated Miniature with Two Figures Hunting in a Landscape
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present illuminated page was once part of a larger manuscript, as evidenced by the tears along the right edge, illustrating a story from the Islamic world. The scene presents two figures in a landscape, one on horseback and another gesturing to a fallen deer. The stylization of the landscape shows influence from the Byzantine tradition of painting, with jagged rocks jutting into a golden sky. The page contains handwritten text on both sides, and is surrounded by gold illustrations of peacocks and a running deer.
11 x 6.5 inches, artwork
18.63 x 14 inches, frame
accompanied on the back with an image of the verso
framed to conservation standards with a 100% rag silk-lined mat in a gold gilded frame
A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. The Persian miniature was the dominant influence on other Islamic miniature traditions, principally the Ottoman miniature...

An original egg tempera and gold leaf on board by American female conceptual contemporary artist Rosemary Lyons.
What makes an artist a failure?
While strolling through the Metropolitan I was viewing the wing piece of a more extensive altar and observed words etched into the golden grounds.
This had a profound resonance with me because of my fascination and utilization of words in all of my work.
Next I visited the Cloisters and stood transfixed in front of Robert Campion’s “Annunciation”
Of particular interest was the lovely white lily that indicates Mary’s purity.
On this same sojourn I witnessed the line out the door and around the block of people waiting to get into a contemporary artist’s retrospective. Is that success?
My response began with one painting of lilies...

Original free standing screen Les Mille et une Nuits by Georges Manzana Pissarro
Located in London, GB
This large free-standing screen was completed circa 1907 and was exhibited at the prestigious Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris - a special section of the Louvre dedicated to decorative arts - in 1914. Having spent his formative years in the company of Impressionist masters such as his father Camille Pissarro, Monet, Cézanne and Renoir, Georges Manzana Pissarro (known widely as 'Manzana') began his career painting in an Impressionist style. However, following the rise of the Orientalism movement in fin-de-siècle Paris, Manzana began to expand his artistic explorations into the field of decorative objects and furniture. During this time he began to experiment with the use of gold and silver paint in his works.
This rich and complex composition depicts female figures inspired by the intoxicating story collection 'One Thousand and One Nights'. The work positively exudes the atmosphere of fin-de-siècle Paris, and clearly demonstrates the influence of Gauguin's Tahiti paintings, making this a unique work and cultural object. In terms of investment opportunity, Manzana Pissarro currently has an auction record €100,000 (approx. £90,000) and this unique work would have a wide appeal amongst decorative arts collectors as well as art deco lovers.
